A group of nine families with students currently or previously enrolled in the Beverly Hills Unified School District (BHUSD) filed a lawsuit against the district in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California on Aug. 7 alleging, in part, violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, race discrimination, racial harassment and deliberate indifference.

Incidents described in the lawsuit include non-Black students calling Black students the n-word, physical attacks on Black students, race-based cyberbullying, encouraging a Black student to kill herself, statements praising slavery, verbal and physical attacks directed towards a Black student with autism and more. The complaint, which was filed by attorneys Rodney Diggs, Brandon Tanter and Tyrine S. Aman of Ivie McNeill Wyatt Purcell & Diggs, describes multiple attempts to alert the district’s administration in an effort to halt the behavior.
