At the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences on July 7, John Mirisch made his last speech as a Beverly Hills City Councilmember after serving for 17 years. Emphasizing his commitment to the city, Mirisch underscored his long-held belief that the role of elected officials is to focus on the needs of their constituents.
“You’ve heard me say it before: when done right, local government is the best form of democracy, because it’s closest to home and home is a sacred concept,” he said. “We’ve all heard the expression, ‘You can’t fight city hall,’ and my response has always been, ‘You shouldn’t have to. City hall exists to serve the community, not the other way around.’”
